Green Tomatoes
Some of the best tomatoes that I have ever tasted were green when ripened (GWR) varieties. Cultivars such as Malakhitovaya Shkatulka, Aunt Ruby’s Green German and Cherokee Lime, are so delicious, that you would never stop eating them. Green when ripened tomatoes also come in different sizes and shapes. Unfortunately, this category is not as popular as many other colors. Personally, I would love more people to try them. So we have chosen some of the best GWR varieties for you to sample. My hope is that they can be sampled and eventually promoted, so that they can gain more notoriety. So if you have never tasted a green when ripened tomato, jump in. You’d thank me!

One of the most prolific dwarf varieties that I have grown, Dwarf Amy's Ohio is a winner. 3 feet tall plants produce beautiful green when ripened fruits, some of which have pinkish blossom ends. When sliced, you will find a pretty and inviting lime green. These are perfect little slicers with sweet and complex flavors. Fruits up to 6 ounces. Perfect for container gardening or raised beds.

Since I hadn't really seen Georgia Green Cherry tomato anywhere online, I decided to give them a try. I was also very excited about them because I love growing potato leafed varieties. I also found it interesting because it was a green when ripened PL and cherry variety too. This large sized cherry has a very pretty exterior. On its inside, Georgia Green Cherry is lime green and aromatic. Fruits were sweeter but mild, yet its flavor was big. No blemishes! These came on a little later but was well worth the wait. One of the hardiest varieties for me in 2021. Not many seeds. Let's help to make this one popular. It's a true find!

Paul Robeson European tomato is a black plum that has that big flavor of some of the better blacks. Plants are prolific and ripen fruits relatively early. This, to me, was one of the better cherry/plum varieties that I grew in 2021. Deep chocolate fruits have rich flavor that is very satisfying and will encourage garden snacking. A little softer to the touch, this is definitely a great choice for saucing, but if caught before over ripened, would make a great addition to salads. Really good aroma that is consistently tempting.

Green Krim Cherry tomato is a pretty little tomato with good flavor. Green when ripened, 1-1.5 inch diameter fruits are on the sweet side with plenty juice. These are softish to the touch when fully ripened. Fruity undertones are pleasing and helps to complete this little package. Plants work hard, and although they breezed through our extended rainy times here, they really excelled when it got very hot. A good choice for cherry tomato lovers, if you are willing to try a green when ripened variety!

Abraham Green Tomato is a very fine specimen. I believe it's the sister tomato to Abraham brown because they share almost every characteristic except for color. These are sweet and very smooth and very enjoyable!. A perfect tomato lovers tomato, if you are willing to try a green when ripened variety. These come in a little bit late, around 80-90 days from transplant, but they are absolutely worth. Plants are very vibrant and hard working. Production is good! Try these!

Dwarf Numbat Tomato
Dwarf Numbat Tomato was a nice little find for us in 2020. Short plants produced heavy crops of large cherries that were great for canning, snacking and even slicing. Taste for us was mild and tart and tasty. Our plants were about 2-2.5 feet tall and started ripening fruits about 70 days after transplant. A beautiful marbling of greens and yellows, Numbat will work well in small garden spaces as well as in containers. -
Amber Keyes Tomato
A beautiful sight to see, Amber Keyes tomato plants produce huge clusters of the most beautifully colored, greenish/yellowish fruits! True to its multiflora genes, our plants produced many clusters of more than 50 fruits, that were sweet, inviting and juicy. I especially liked that they were relatively early producers. These were transplanted in early May and we got our first ripened fruits on July 7th. Get ready for tons and tons of pear shaped cherry sized fruits! You will be amazed! Plants were 5 feet tall and hard working. A great choice for snacking, preserves(I make jam), salads etc! -
Grub's Mystery Green Tomato
Some people say that you would find the sweetest tomatoes in the green when ripened family. I am here to confirm this! Grub's Mystery Green tomato is a very sweet and well textured variety. In fact, it tastes like some kind of tropical experience to me. 10-14 ounce fruits are born on huge potato leafed vines. Production is good! The plants displayed good disease resistance and hardiness, even in the worst conditions! Slice these up and lay them on a platter and you will see how very beautiful they are. Perfect for sandwiches, cooking and more! One of the very best green tomatoes in my opinion! Don't be afraid to try green when ripened varieties, they are tons of fun to grow and eat! -

Elser Farm's Brown Derby Tomato
One of the most uniquely colored varieties I have ever grown, Elser Farm's Brown Derby Tomato is a sight to behold. Large fruits can approach 12-16 ounces. Ours averaged 8-12. One of the things that I love about this variety is its aroma. I could smell the sliced fruits from a distance away. Taste is rich and earthy, with some sweetness. Texture was good too. Honestly, in 2020 I only had these off the vine. I loved them that way. But I could totally see them being a hit on sandwiches and also on a platter. So beautiful, so good! -
Karma Miracle Tomato
What a fine tasting variety! KARMA Miracle tomato is another excellent production by Canadian breeder Karen Olivier and Marsha Eisenberg of Plantation Florida. Together, these two dedicated women created the KARMA series. Miracle is perhaps my favorite because its taste is top of the line and it's also super beautiful too. Tall, wispy potato leafed vines, have staying power and produced well in 2020. These began to ripen around 72 days from transplant. They will also do well in northern gardens. Now, back to taste! Some fruitiness, nice balance, complete experience, satisfying. Get ready to harvest a lot of larger sized cherries, all season long! A Winner for sure! -
Kozula 72 Tomato
We have grown quite a few varieties in the Kozula series. Only a very few have made it to our seed store. Kozula 72 tomato is, to this point, one of my personal favorites. Good producing, regular leafed plants, give plenty, though not prolific. Bi-colored fruits are green with purple blushing when fully ripened. These are rich tasting, fruity and sweeter with good balance. Good choice for plating, snacking, sandwiches and even cooking. This tomato reminds me a bit of Ananas Noire. Will definitely be making regular returns to our lineup. -
Taiga Tomato
Karen Olivier has done it again! Her Taiga tomato made big waves in our garden in 2020. I just can't believe how beautiful and tasty these are! 6-12 ounce oxhearts are produced on tall potato leafed plants that start ripening around mid season(75-80 days). Give them a chance to ripen well, then cut and taste. You will find that these are a little fruity, juicy, have lots of nicely textured meat and are delicious! Deceptively weighty, there aren't too many seeds in this gem. Plants are very hardy and are recommended for northern gardens too! Awesome selection for slicing, sandwiches, garnish, cooking or just eating right of the vine. -

True Colors Tomato
Again, another fascinating bi-colored oxheart from Karen Olivier. Like Midnight Sun, True Colors will blow you away with its taste and beauty. It's almost ironic that this variety is called True Colors when its colors almost seem unreal. Then on the other hand, perhaps that's exactly what Karen planned. These wispy, potato leafed plants, produced 8-14 ounce oxhearts that were always beautiful. Vines were skinny and lanky and would need early staking. Plants produced plenty, though not prolific. I was certainly pleased with production. These were bred by in Canada by Karen and will be suitable for northern gardens. When fully ripened, these are sweeter, sort of fruity and medium mild. Balance and texture are superb! 70-75 days -
Grandpa Grandpa Gary's Green Tomato
I grew out two Dwarf Grandpa Gary's Green tomato plants in 2018 and literally forgot to harvest them. Towards the end of the season I managed to get about 5 fruits. I found them to be tasty but milder and on the sweet side. A very pleasant and timely experience for me! Fruits were about three, to six ounces, but average about four. These were among the latest dwarfs to ripen, but the wait was worth it. Plants are regular leaf and produce a nice amount, but not prolific. Nice selection for snacking, salads and fresh eating. Great for smaller gardens and containers as most dwarfs are! -
Dwarf Parfait Tomato
I love growing dwarf tomatoes because they always surprise me. After growing them for quit a few years, I still cant get over how much they can produce produce and how large some of the tomatoes can be. Dwarf Parfait tomato, is a beautiful and larger variety that, when ripened, is green on the outside and yellow on the inside. This combination makes for an interesting contrast that will turn any head! Three feet tall plants, produce 6-12 ounce fruits that have a deep, rich taste. Texture is superb and aroma is very inviting. Our plants displayed excellent disease resistance, making these even more attractive to me. Parfait is a later variety but your wait wouldn't be in vain. Perfect for sandwiches, slicing, garnish and more! Dwarf varieties are perfect for smaller gardens! Recommended! -

Ananas Zebra Tomato
Ananas Zebra tomato is a delicious variety. 6-10 ounce fruits are beautifully bi-colored inside and out. Our plants were prolific and showed nice disease resistance. We noticed our first ripened fruits around day 75 from transplant. They continued producing heavily throughout the season. These would be great as market tomatoes because the have nice flavor and texture and would hold up for market. Perfect choice for fresh salsa, garnish, cooking, slicing and fresh eating. Staking early would assist in a successful crop! Another nice addition to any bi-colored tomato garden! -

Coeur de Surpriz Tomato
One of my biggest regrets in 2019 is that I didn't grow enough Coeur de Surpriz tomato plants. I grew out 4 plants and 3 of them were drowned in the flood waters in mid-June. When the remaining plant finally started ripening its fruits, I was amazed at how beautiful they were. Not wanting to eat many, in order to maximize my seed count, I tried a few. Then a few more, and more. Eventually I only saved fruits from half of the plant. These were sweet and fruity with a little tang. Very good little tomato! Bi-colored outside and out. Good choice for fresh eating, salads, garnish, dehydrating, fresh salsa, canning and more. Nice all purpose variety. Might I say again, very, very good! -
Green Gables Tomato
Green Gables tomato is a very delicious green variety that every should try. This 5-10 ounce fruit is sweet, a little fruity and satisfying. Bred by Jason Haynes, this is truly a nice producer! Potato leaved plants are hardy and prolific. Ours were just under 6 feet tall. A perfect tomato for slicing, it also shines in green tomato sauce, on sandwiches, for cooking and garnish. I especially love its wonderful aroma when fully ripened. For those who have never tried a green when ripened tomato variety, this would be a great way to start. Stake and feed well and you should be well rewarded. You cant go wrong with this beauty. Plant a few, get your baskets ready and get ready for the ride! -
Fuego Verde Tomato
The ultimate salad variety, Fuego Verde tomato will not disappoint you! Another fantastic Fred Hempel production, this high producing and super tasty fruit will keep you wanting more. If you love fresh green salsa, these work wonderfully too! Our five feet tall, wispy leaved plants started ripening their fruits about 72 days after transplant and continued until the end of the season. They produced tons of approximately 2.5 inch, elongated, bi-colored green and yellow tomatoes, that were juicy and desirable. A really nice mix of sweet and tang. Perfect for canning, salads, fresh eating, market sales, dehydrating and so much more. You must try these! -
Zebra Ezel Tomato
Looking for a really pretty and tasty tomato for garnish, sauces, market sales and more? Zebra Ezel tomato will definitely work. This delicious variety will turn heads every time in your garden. It will also be a great conversation starter. Very prolific plants are hardy and produce bunches of about 4-5 fruits, that begin to ripen about 75 days after transplant. When ripened, bi-colored fruits are blends of green with light streaks of orange. Plants are tall so early and effective staking would help. Zebra Ezel has an earthy taste that is complex. It veers on the mild side, but not too much. Just the rich amount of tartness. Very nice taste on this one! 75 days to ripen from transplant. Click Here to see it on YouTube. -
Evil Olive Tomato
I really got a surprise when my Evil Olive tomato plants started ripening their fruits. Even as an experienced grower, their exterior colors when fully ripened were stunning and surprising to me. But that's not all! I got an even bigger surprise when I cut them open. Beautiful shades of orange, greens and lime suddenly revealed themselves. Evil Olive plants have a darkish tint to their foliage and produce plenty regular sized cherry tomatoes. Fruit color is dark green with a nice shade of orange on blossom end, when ripened. Taste is nice with a little tang. Great fresh salsa tomato! Also nice for snacking, canning, garnish. Good disease resistance. 75 days after transplant. -
Harvard Square Tomato
A standout for us in 2019, Harvard Square tomato will remain in my gardens from now on. Delicious fruits have unique fruitiness and after-taste that results in a very pleasing experience. Beautiful inside and out, this variety is a huge producer. Well ripened fruits are beautifully bi-colored and will turn heads. Ripeed fruits can also have pinkish blush on the blossom end, which can seep trough to it's flesh. Just a beautiful selection. Fruits begin to ripen about 75 days after transplant. Plants will produce all season long! Good disease resistance. Great choice for garnish, slicing a platter, cooking, market sales and more. Click Here to see it on YouTube -
If you have never tasted a green when ripened tomato, Dwarf Jackass Green tomato is a great one for you to try. Easily one of the best green dwarf tomato varieties, this one is a keeper! Three feet tall tree-like plants produce plenty 6-12 ounce tomatoes that are fruity, balanced and rich. Stake well! Our first ripened fruits appeared about 80 days after transplant. They continued coming until season's end. Plants produce plenty of tomatoes that were green inside and out. A small amount of pink blushing on the blossom end. It's tasty reminds me of Aunt Ruby's German Green, another fantastic tomato. Dwarf Jackass Green can work great in containers too!

Perhaps the most unique green variety that we have ever grown, Spear's Tennessee Green tomato was definitely worth it! I heard great things about these before I tried them and was really excited to see how they produced. When they began to ripen, I was intrigued by their deep olive color, unlike most greens. Fruits were meaty, intense and delicious! Not too sweet, not too tart, but rich and satisfying, with some aftertaste that reminds me of some tropical fruits that I grew up with in the Caribbean. Put Spear's Tennessee Green on you list, you wouldn't regret it!

Kuzula 132 tomato was a first time grow-out for us in 2018. I found that it was a great snacking, fresh salsa, garnish, canning and cooking tomato. It leans to the milder side with some small hints of sugars and acidity in its aftertaste. Vines are prolific and never really budged for diseases. They began to ripen their fruits around 72 days after we transplanted them in the garden. Beautiful bi-color fruits were plum shaped and about 2 inches long. All in all it is a good tomato for quite a few things. I snacked on these a lot while I was in the garden, especially on hot days. They were quite refreshing! See Kozula 133.

Blue Sun tomato is another new antho variety that we have introduced in 2018. Smaller sized slicing tomatoes are a lovely lime green when fully ripened and sliced. On its exterior, fruits have some nice antho on the top side and a beautiful like green on its bottom end. Juicy and milder with some sweetness, Blue Sun has a very pleasing after-taste that is a bit difficult for me to describe. Indeterminate plants were prolific and hardy. From season's start to end, our plants had no issues. our first ripened fruits appeared around 75 days after transplant. From that point they kept coming!

Dwarf Saucy Mary tomato is a really unique, tasty and pretty tomato that I recommend for anyone growing dwarf varieties. If your aim is to make some tasty, green tomato sauce, give it a try. Elongated, green and yellow, bi-colored fruits measure about two inches long. They are born on determinate plants. Prolific plants are tree-like and grow to about 2.5 feet tall. Fruits begin to ripen about 75 days after transplant. Sweetish, not too juicy and medium mild, these have nice flavor and would definitely perk up your dish. Also nice for garnishing, pickling, canning, cooking and more. Good for container growing too!
