5 Awesome Stuffing Tomato Varieties
I love stuffing tomatoes with different things. I also love to eat some just fresh and stuffed, while I like others baked. Most tomatoes do not hold up very well when cooked or baked in the oven, but some varieties do well if not over baked. A short period of medium heat will work well for most varieties. When taking this route, I basically stuff them and place the in the oven for about 10 minutes on medium heat, if my desire is for a warm meal. But usually I just stuff them and eat them fresh. For this reason my selections are not only easy to work with, but also tasty.
Mushroom Basket
- The Biggest of all on this list, Mushroom Basket is an excellent stuffer. If you have big appetite, this is the one for you. It was difficult for me to finish an entire meal. These can be baked a little, just for the purpose of warming the exterior, but not to the point of sogginess.
Gezahnte Buhrer Keel
Gezahnte Bührer Keel is possibly my favorite stuffer. This tomato has a mild , sweetish taste that compliments almost any stuffing. I have stuffed mine with pasta, mac and cheese, tuna salad and more. Everything was great! I also like that it is not too large so just one makes a great sized meal.
Salsa Pomodoro
The sweetest tomato on this list, Salas Pomodoro has a softer feel but makes a really great stuffer. I prefer to eat these fresh as opposed to placing them in the oven. They melt very well into any stuffing. You wouldn’t know where the tomato ends and the stuffing starts. Very nice stuffer.
Tlacolula Yellow and Red are decent stuffing tomatoes. Thin fleshed, these do not hold up well when baked, so stuffing them fresh is the best way to enjoy them. Simply remove the seed cavities and place anything in them. These make great little snacks. I stuff mine with sautéed mushrooms and onions. Add a little cheese on top. Yum!
Striped Cavern
Striped Cavern has long been a favorite stuffing tomato. This one also stands really well on its own. It can be enjoyed like any other tomato without any stuffing. When stuffed, it’s a real treat. A little heating in the oven will blend it’s ingredients into each other and create a surprisingly satisfying meal!
Yellow Stuffer
On the mild side, this is the perfect stuffing tomato. It has a firm feel, medium thick walls and deep enough to make a great sized meal when stuffed. Prolific plants, fantastic disease resistance. Stuff with anything you want. If you are having a party, grow a few of these, you will have a nice big crop to feed everyone.
Note: all of the mentioned varieties also make good to excellent sauce, especially Salsa Pomodoro and Mushroom Basket.
