Paul Robeson has long been one of the finest heirloom tomatoes around and is highly coveted by chefs, serious growers, fun growers and everyone who love good black tomatoes. It has also been a favorite of mine, especially for making some serious salsa and black tomato sauce. Five feet tall vines produce 5-10 ounce, chocolate colored fruits which have superb rich and smoky flavor. Vines perform well in high heat. Some mulching and minimal pruning is recommended. Stake well! Paul Robeson’s tomato vines begin to ripen their fruits about 80 days after transplant. But they will continue until frost. If you have never grown these, I highly recommend them.
