Green Tomatoes
Some of the best tomatoes that I have ever tasted were green when ripened (GWR) varieties. Cultivars such as Malakhitovaya Shkatulka, Aunt Ruby’s Green German and Cherokee Lime, are so delicious, that you would never stop eating them. Green when ripened tomatoes also come in different sizes and shapes. Unfortunately, this category is not as popular as many other colors. Personally, I would love more people to try them. So we have chosen some of the best GWR varieties for you to sample. My hope is that they can be sampled and eventually promoted, so that they can gain more notoriety. Abraham Green Tomato is a very fine specimen. I believe it's the sister tomato to Abraham brown because they share almost every characteristic except for color. These are sweet and very smooth and very enjoyable!. A perfect tomato lovers tomato, if you are willing to try a green when ripened variety. These come in a little bit late, around 80-90 days from transplant, but they are absolutely worth. Plants are very vibrant and hard working. Production is good! Try these! -
Amber Keyes Tomato
A beautiful sight to see, Amber Keyes tomato plants produce huge clusters of the most beautifully colored, greenish/yellowish fruits! True to its multiflora genes, our plants produced many clusters of more than 50 fruits, that were sweet, inviting and juicy. I especially liked that they were relatively early producers. These were transplanted in early May and we got our first ripened fruits on July 7th. Get ready for tons and tons of pear shaped cherry sized fruits! You will be amazed! Plants were 5 feet tall and hard working. A great choice for snacking, preserves(I make jam), salads etc! -
Ananas Zebra Tomato
Ananas Zebra tomato is a delicious variety. 6-10 ounce fruits are beautifully bi-colored inside and out. Our plants were prolific and showed nice disease resistance. We noticed our first ripened fruits around day 75 from transplant. They continued producing heavily throughout the season. These would be great as market tomatoes because the have nice flavor and texture and would hold up for market. Perfect choice for fresh salsa, garnish, cooking, slicing and fresh eating. Staking early would assist in a successful crop! Another nice addition to any bi-colored tomato garden! -
Aunt Ruby's German Green tomato isn't just one of the best green when ripened tomatoes, for me, it's one of the best tomatoes period. An all time classic, this large beefsteak will fulfill your every tomato desire. Vines are foliage dense and thick. Fruits weigh between 10 and 20 ounce. When fully ripened, Aunt Rubys German Green is greenish with pink blushes on the bottom end. -
One of the prettiest green varieties that we grow, Big Green Dwarf tomato is the perfect variety for anyone wanting to grow in smaller spaces or containers. Rugose leaf plants are good with avoiding diseases, and can reach 4 feet tall. and produce big crops of 6-16 ounce light olive tomatoes. When sliced, beautiful yellowish colors reveal themselves. Big Green Dwarf plants begin to ripen their fruits about 75-80 days after transplant. Tomatoes are Juicy, has a tart after-taste and rich. Great for sandwiches and salsas! -
Blue Sun tomato is another new antho variety that we have introduced in 2018. Smaller sized slicing tomatoes are a lovely lime green when fully ripened and sliced. On its exterior, fruits have some nice antho on the top side and a beautiful like green on its bottom end. Juicy and milder with some sweetness, Blue Sun has a very pleasing after-taste that is a bit difficult for me to describe. Indeterminate plants were prolific and hardy. From season's start to end, our plants had no issues. our first ripened fruits appeared around 75 days after transplant. From that point they kept coming! -
Captain Lucky Tomato
Captain Lucky tomato is a potato leaf variety. It produces 6-10 ounce, bi-colored, delicious slicers. Plants are robust and grow to about 5 feet tall and have shown good disease resistance for us. Tomatoes grow in clusters of about 5. They begin to ripen about 80 days after transplant. This bi-color beauty is rich, fruity and juicy. The interior of this gem is beautifully marbled with different shades of pinks on green. Perfect for garnishing, slicing, market sales, cooking and fresh eating off the vine. If you are looking for a consistent tomato that will not let you down, then this is the way to go. Also check out its sister tomato. -
Charlies Green is perhaps the best green that I have grown in years. When I first grew them, somehow I missed harvesting them until the end of the season. When I finally harvested a few, I was hooked! I grew the out the following year and was totally impressed. 6-10 ounce tomatoes are fruity, juicy, full flavored and have good balance. Flesh has a smooth texture and seem to melt in your mouth. Great aroma too! You should be harvesting your first fruits about 78 days after transplant. -
Cherokee Green tomato is a real pleasure to grow! It also has s taste all of its own. not wanting to make it difficult for you to choose, this tomato reminds me of a mild fruit that just soothes you. it's sweeter, a little mild, have a lot of great rich juice and fruity. Vines are hardy have good disease resistance, are about 6 feet tall and produce plenty fruits. Tomatoes are in clusters of 3-5. They weigh about six ounce. Tomatoes begin to ripen 80 days after transplant and are present until frost!. -
75 Days. To me, this is still one of the best green tomatoes around. Let it ripen well and you will be immensely rewarded. Cherokee Lime is a 4-6 ounce tomato that is all about the taste factor. This is an excellent variety. Tomatoes ripen green with a small yellowish tinge. They are perfectly balanced, rich, juicy an satisfying. This is a great tomato for munching in the garden, salsas, salads, garnishing, cooking and market sales. Try drying some and making green tomato flakes or powder. You'd be surprised! -
Coeur de Surpriz Tomato
One of my biggest regrets in 2019 is that I didn't grow enough Coeur de Surpriz tomato plants. I grew out 4 plants and 3 of them were drowned in the flood waters in mid-June. When the remaining plant finally started ripening its fruits, I was amazed at how beautiful they were. Not wanting to eat many, in order to maximize my seed count, I tried a few. Then a few more, and more. Eventually I only saved fruits from half of the plant. These were sweet and fruity with a little tang. Very good little tomato! Bi-colored outside and out. Good choice for fresh eating, salads, garnish, dehydrating, fresh salsa, canning and more. Nice all purpose variety. Might I say again, very, very good! -
Copper River Tomato
Copper River is a beautiful bi-color tomato that is splashed with greens and purples. When sliced, there is noting like the color experience that it presents! Disease resistant vines produce a good amount of 6-10 ounce tomatoes that begin to ripen about 80 days after transplant. Fruits are rich with other complex flavors. A great selection for salsas, garnishing, sandwiches, drying and market sales. -
One of the most prolific dwarf varieties that I have grown, Dwarf Amy's Ohio is a winner. 3 feet tall plants produce beautiful green when ripened fruits, some of which have pinkish blossom ends. When sliced, you will find a pretty and inviting lime green. These are perfect little slicers with sweet and complex flavors. Fruits up to 6 ounces. Perfect for container gardening or raised beds. -
One of the greener slicers that we grow, I am so happy that it comes on a dwarf vine. Plants are about 4 feet tall and hardy and have rugose potato leaves. They begin to ripen their fruits about 85 days after transplant Boasting a balanced, full flavored taste, this is a tomato that you could do anything with. Our biggest fruits have been in the 10 ounce range! -
If you have never tasted a green when ripened tomato, Dwarf Jackass Green tomato is a great one for you to try. Easily one of the best green dwarf tomato varieties, this one is a keeper! Three feet tall tree-like plants produce plenty 6-12 ounce tomatoes that are fruity, balanced and rich. Stake well! Our first ripened fruits appeared about 80 days after transplant. They continued coming until season's end. Plants produce plenty of tomatoes that were green inside and out. A small amount of pink blushing on the blossom end. It's tasty reminds me of Aunt Ruby's German Green, another fantastic tomato. Dwarf Jackass Green can work great in containers too! -
70 Days. Dwarf Jade Beauty tomato has a special place in my heart. When these started ripening on the farm in 2017 and I tasted them, I realized that I should have had more plants. Eventually I made my peace with that. One day, I was looking at my garden map and realized we accidentally planted 3 more plants elsewhere in the garden. Bingo! We now have enough seeds to share. Dwarf Kelly Gren tomato is a 3-6 ounce fruit that has a very sparkling taste. Our vines have been about 3.5 feet tall and produced the greenest when ripened of any tomatoes that we grow. This beauty is green in and out! our vines also demonstrated excellent disease resistance and began to ripen their fruits around 75 days after transplant. Dwarf Numbat Tomato
Dwarf Numbat Tomato was a nice little find for us in 2020. Short plants produced heavy crops of large cherries that were great for canning, snacking and even slicing. Taste for us was mild and tart and tasty. Our plants were about 2-2.5 feet tall and started ripening fruits about 70 days after transplant. A beautiful marbling of greens and yellows, Numbat will work well in small garden spaces as well as in containers. -
Dwarf Parfait Tomato
I love growing dwarf tomatoes because they always surprise me. After growing them for quit a few years, I still cant get over how much they can produce produce and how large some of the tomatoes can be. Dwarf Parfait tomato, is a beautiful and larger variety that, when ripened, is green on the outside and yellow on the inside. This combination makes for an interesting contrast that will turn any head! Three feet tall plants, produce 6-12 ounce fruits that have a deep, rich taste. Texture is superb and aroma is very inviting. Our plants displayed excellent disease resistance, making these even more attractive to me. Parfait is a later variety but your wait wouldn't be in vain. Perfect for sandwiches, slicing, garnish and more! Dwarf varieties are perfect for smaller gardens! Recommended! -
Dwarf Peppermint Stripes Tomato
If you are looking for an outstanding Dwarf tomato, try Dwarf Peppermint Stripes. I first grew these in 2020 as a trial and loved them. This year, 2021, I grew them out for seeds. Beautiful bi-colored fruits have complex but very balanced taste. Nice size for a good garden snack. Slices very nicely when fully ripened. Plants are 3 feet tall and prolific. Ours began ripening about 74 days after transplant and continued until frost. Good disease resistance. -
Dwarf Radinilee tomato has always been a huge hit for us here are Renaissance Farms. This tomato is etched in my memory, I love its color, flavor, taste, size and growing habit. Short plants are about 3.5 feet tall and produce a bountiful harvest of purple and green bi-color fruits that can be as big as 10 ounces. When sliced, there is also a beautiful marbling of green and pinks. Taste is rich, sweeter and juicy. Will do excellently in bigger containers! Stake them well! -
Dwarf Saucy Mary tomato is a really unique, tasty and pretty tomato that I recommend for anyone growing dwarf varieties. If your aim is to make some tasty, green tomato sauce, give it a try. Elongated, green and yellow, bi-colored fruits measure about two inches long. They are born on determinate plants. Prolific plants are tree-like and grow to about 2.5 feet tall. Fruits begin to ripen about 75 days after transplant. Sweetish, not too juicy and medium mild, these have nice flavor and would definitely perk up your dish. Also nice for garnishing, pickling, canning, cooking and more. Good for container growing too! -
Elser Farm's Brown Derby Tomato
One of the most uniquely colored varieties I have ever grown, Elser Farm's Brown Derby Tomato is a sight to behold. Large fruits can approach 12-16 ounces. Ours averaged 8-12. One of the things that I love about this variety is its aroma. I could smell the sliced fruits from a distance away. Taste is rich and earthy, with some sweetness. Texture was good too. Honestly, in 2020 I only had these off the vine. I loved them that way. But I could totally see them being a hit on sandwiches and also on a platter. So beautiful, so good! -
Emerald Evergreen tomato is a beautiful ( six to ten ounce) fruit that ripens green. Packed with outstanding fruity flavors, this winner is perfect for sandwiches, green tomato sauce, salsa and slicing. Vines are six feet tall, vibrant and productive. Fruits ripen starting around the 80 day mark. when sliced, Emerald Evergreen is bright green inside and very aromatic. Be sure to stake these well and check fruits for ripeness. When ripened, it's outside is yellowish green. Happy Growing! -
Evil Olive Tomato
I really got a surprise when my Evil Olive tomato plants started ripening their fruits. Even as an experienced grower, their exterior colors when fully ripened were stunning and surprising to me. But that's not all! I got an even bigger surprise when I cut them open. Beautiful shades of orange, greens and lime suddenly revealed themselves. Evil Olive plants have a darkish tint to their foliage and produce plenty regular sized cherry tomatoes. Fruit color is dark green with a nice shade of orange on blossom end, when ripened. Taste is nice with a little tang. Great fresh salsa tomato! Also nice for snacking, canning, garnish. Good disease resistance. 75 days after transplant. -
After years of growing it out, I still cannot get over this tomato. Favorite de Bretagne is unique through and through. 2-3 inch long fruits pack excellent, rich, fruity and sweet flavors that are breath taking. Prolific, determinate plants that hate to drop blooms are very beautiful! They grow no taller than 2.5 feet and are sprawled. These are perfect for containers or in the ground and can be grown without stakes. Good disease resistance. Also perfect for sauce, salsas, garnishing, chefs, cooking drying and eating right off the vine. Grow some plants for the farmers market. Get ready to eat plenty! Big hit! -
Flander's Contrast tomato is very unique in its looks. The green version of Blue Pear, this beauty is certainly a head-turner. Pear shaped fruits with antho tops, display varying levels of darkness. They begin to ripen about 72 days after transplant. Vines are about 6 feet tall and never stop producing until frosts. Fruits are mildly sweet, juicy and have a really good texture. Staking is essential because plants are relatively skinny.This is certainly a fine tomato for fresh salsa, garnishing, dehydrating, tomato juice and tons more. Try eating some straight off of the vine, very pleasing! Definitely worth growing! -
Fuego Verde Tomato
The ultimate salad variety, Fuego Verde tomato will not disappoint you! Another fantastic Fred Hempel production, this high producing and super tasty fruit will keep you wanting more. If you love fresh green salsa, these work wonderfully too! Our five feet tall, wispy leaved plants started ripening their fruits about 72 days after transplant and continued until the end of the season. They produced tons of approximately 2.5 inch, elongated, bi-colored green and yellow tomatoes, that were juicy and desirable. A really nice mix of sweet and tang. Perfect for canning, salads, fresh eating, market sales, dehydrating and so much more. You must try these!
